Bryson had another seizure on Dec. 28th. Travis was at work and B and I were doing our usual thing. I could tell he wasn’t feeling well, so I gave him Tylenol at 7 am. I called Travis to come home for lunch because I didn’t feel right about the way he was acting. He convinced me he was fine and not to worry (I’m a bit paranoid since the last seizure). Less than 2 hours later, he had a seizure. I immediately called 911 and followed the directions of the operator until the paramedics arrived (which felt like a million years). His temp was 103.8 by the time we arrived at the hospital. They did blood work, a urine analysis, and a chest x-ray. The doctor told us he thought he had a virus. We kept him on Tylenol and Ibuprofen for 48 hours and followed up with his pediatrician. Dr. Hund agreed with the viral diagnosis and referred us to a neurologist. That Friday Bryson was scheduled for an EEG, but wasn’t able to complete the test due to low oxygen levels. We went straight to the pediatrician to get his levels tested again and they were fine. However, we did discover he now had double ear infections. His EEG was rescheduled and the results came back normal. A small percentage of children are prone to febrile seizures. It is not the actual degree of the temperature, but the rate at which it rises. Bryson may go from 97 to 101 in 20 minutes which will trigger a seizure. This makes it very hard to prevent. 60% of children only have one febrile seizure. Once a child has 2, they are likely to have more. Children outgrow this around age 6. Needless to say, I have been very vigilant about taking his temperature many times a day. I pray that time will help me relax and I will become more confident in my ability to visually assess Bryson correctly. As of right now, my fear of this happening again is huge. I can’t put into words how horrible it is to watch your child go through that. We are so grateful for the normal EEG results. Now I just need to find a way to CALM DOWN.
